Summary

A player reported that sauce can't be ladled onto a plate of cooked chicken legs. On TFMCDev01 (same cooking 0.3.3 / InteractibleFurniture 0.2.5 / TLibs 2.1.1 jars as Main), a bot test showed legs sauce fine on a fresh plate. The real cause is plate reuse: when a sauced dish is taken off, the plate keeps its sauce slot visual. hasSauce() then treats the plate as already sauced, so every later dish on that plate is rejected and the ladle stays full. Any food is affected, not just legs.

  • When the last food is taken off a plate (FurnitureSlotItemTakeEvent, fired before InteractibleFurniture removes the slot and saves the plate), remove the sauce slot.
  • The existing one-second plate tick also removes a sauce slot left on a plate with no food. This clears plates already saved in that state on Main and saves them through persistFurniture (which resolves the root for plates on tables).
  • addSauce now returns before touching the ladle when the plate is empty. Sauce put on an empty plate never reached food added later, and it would now be cleared by the tick.

Documentation impact

Contract

  • Affected behavior: a plate's sauce visual is removed once no food remains on it; sauce ladled onto an empty plate is refused and the ladle stays full. Plates with food keep their sauce.
  • Tests run: mvn -B clean verify locally, 210 tests pass. New PlateManagerTest cases cover the leftover-sauce check (last food leaving, other food remaining, sauce alone, no sauce) and the empty-plate guard. Dev bot test results are posted in a comment below.
  • Player wiki (ProvinceSystem /wiki/cooking): no change.

Notes

  • Not addressed here: water-only saucepan sauce is named 000000Mixed Sauce and ladling it onto a plate throws an NPE in CategoryDictionary.getSauceItemPath (null colour), so no sauce visual appears for it. Separate bug.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Leftover sauce is cleared and saved when the last food slot is taken, preventing stale sauce from remaining on the plate.
    • Sauce remains visible while food slots are still present.
    • Adding sauce to an empty or display-only plate, or one without a loaded food item, no longer adds a sauce slot or consumes the ladle.

PlateManager removes and persists a sauce slot when no active food slot remains. addSauce returns unless an active non-sauce, non-display slot contains a recognized food item.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: ryanbarlow97

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7ce7e

Empty plates with an unloaded food slot may retain sauce, leaving part of the cleanup fix uncertain. Resolve that case before merging unless the remaining risk is explicitly accepted.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7ce7e

The behavior is confined to plate sauce state and does not appear to grant players new access or authority. The remaining uncertainty is whether the furniture system always completes and saves a plate removal after the sauce is cleared.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A player can reach the sauce-addition and slot-take paths through furniture interactions. The new scheduled cleanup can affect placed plates beyond the currently interacting player's plate, but only when a plate has a sauce slot and no food slot.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The take handler ignores previously cancelled events and checks that furniture is a plate. The inspected cooking-station take handler runs earlier at default priority, and its station lookup returns no reference for furniture outside its three cooking-station types.

The sauce visual stayed on a plate after its food was removed, so hasSauce
rejected sauce for every later dish on that plate (reported with chicken
legs, but any food was affected). Remove the sauce slot when the last food
leaves, clear leftover sauce on plates saved before this fix, and keep the
ladle full when sauce is ladled onto an empty plate.

Dev test (TFMCDev01)

The PR build cooking-DEV-20260927-0646 (8c829a7, rebased on v0.3.4) loaded cleanly on dev (Enabling Cooking vDEV-20260927-0646, no Cooking/InteractibleFurniture errors). I tested it with a mineflayer bot using real saucepan sauce (water + basil, scooped with a ladle):

Check Result
Filet on a fresh plate, sauced PASS (plate + filet + sauce visual)
Take the sauced filet off PASS: sauce visual cleared (3 → 1 displays). Before the fix the visual stayed and blocked the next dish
Put a chicken leg on that reused plate, ladle sauce PASS: accepted, sauce visual shown, and the leg taken back carries the sauce data. This is the reported bug
Ladle onto an empty plate PASS: refused, ladle stays full, no sauce visual

Not covered live: a plate with two foods. The bot could not put a second food on an occupied plate (same with v0.3.3), so this is covered by sauceStaysWhileOtherFoodRemains instead. The empty-slot/unloaded-food guard added in the latest commit is covered by unit tests; I'll re-run the dev test on the release jar before pushing to Main.

Before the fix (v0.3.3, same flow): the reused plate kept the sauce visual and the second dish was rejected with the ladle still full.
